What this quote is stating is that even if he does not really accomplish anything, or wins at something, at least he put in effort into what he was doing. He got what he got truthfully instead of cheating his way into doing things. A reliable individual when you choose the wrong way, he is there to correct you and guide a fellow friend into living a life of righteousness. Being a truthful being is better than lying and others finding out you did so. It will ruin your reputation as a person,and ruin yourself with the walls of lies you built. Its most likable for you, and other individuals to be truthful to your word and action. Try with determination, not with fooling. Never choose the easier way to do things, choose to work hard towards something. Be generous to your fellow people around you as ugly as things are. It will all pay off for you at the end.
