What this quote means is that the people who do the correct choices through out life are really the individuals living it properly well. Let me put it this way, imagine your life full of bad decisions. How would you feel through out your journey of living if all you did were mistakes and never really learn from them or tried to correct yourself before or afterwards? Pretty dull place to walk through don't you think? You know, choosing the wrong paths just makes the ground more complicated and dangerous to walk upon. It slows you down, as it feeds on the privileges you once had before making certain choices. Always do the greatest of good if you want to live a good life.
